The geranium flower is black in colour – or pelargonium – is a genus of about 200 species which consists of perennial, shrub and succulent plants that grow best in moist, but well-drained soil and direct sunlight. Geraniums – sometimes referred to as storksbills – are known to bloom abundantly in temperate areas around the world. Both members of the geraniaceae family, the true geranium – also called the “hardy geranium” – is often confused with pelargoniums, as they were once considered a part of the same genus. Due to extensive breeding, the geranium flower comes in many shapes and colors – from funnel to star shaped; fuchsia, purple, orange, red, pink and white. These flowers are also thought to fall into six groups: angel, hanging, royal, zonal, unique and shrubby-leaved.
The geranium flower is quite varied in its uses. These flowers have for many years been cultivated for their culinary, household and medicinal uses. Geraniums are frequently used to flavor everything from baked goods to sugar, and – when dried – are known for their calming effect when steeped to create sweet, soothing teas. As a curative, geraniums are known to treat a number of problems. These flowers are thought to have strong antibacterial properties, and are often used as astringents to treat skin conditions – especially when mixed with witch hazel. They are also said to work wonders for stomach ailments, headaches and arthritis. As a household product, the extracted oils are commonly used to repel insects, as an aromatherapy product, or as a skin-conditioning bath ingredient. In legends, the geranium flower is thought to be both an aphrodisiac and talisman for protection. It is thought that spraying yourself with its scent can attract love, while spraying it around your house can protect you from harm.
The geranium flower has a good deal of mixed symbolism associated with it. The geranium is considered a feminine element and is thought to embody health, love, fertility and protection. These flowers are also said to represent friendship, and when presented to a new or old friend, are thought to symbolize preference for that particular individual. On the more negative side, these flowers may also represent folly, foolishness or melancholy. However, despite the few negative connotations, geraniums can make great gifts as they are a fabulous token of harmonious affections.This takes individuals to new beginnings, where they have to start over and live a new life, leaving
behind old friends to start something new. I decided to go out and try the road less travelled. As
a child I was fortunate enough to have parents, who instead of buying me little cars and toys as gifts
decided to rather get me musical instruments, as a means of developing myself. And so it came to
be that I started the playing the piano when I was only five years old. At first all I did was match
notes with each other, trying to work out different things, in other words teaching myself how to play.
By age six I wrote my first little piano piece. After that, I tried the same thing with other instruments
and by age twelve I was able to play piano, drums, pan flute, accordion and a substantial amount
of flute. There was a guitar in the house but seeing that it was almost impossible to find the right cords,
I used to tune the whole guitar into one key and played it with one finger over the bar. This I
perfected into an art-form, and at the same time invented my own, “one fingered” way of playing guitar,
which I must add was not an overall accepted style under real musicians. Even though this can be
considered a weird style, it still allowed me to write my first song on guitar by age 15. This
song was the first attempt at including lyrics and would later also play a decisive role in my
decision to go into music. One day I was sitting alone in my room facing away from the door. While playing my “first”song a friend sneaked up behind me and heard it.
Once I had finished, he tapped me on my shoulder and said that my talents were wasted and told me to go into music full time. This prompted
me into going out to a fancy restaurant and asking for the opportunity as a background-music keyboard player. Seeing that I still sounded like
a child and did not have much of a voice, this was only an instrumental gig. I had to quit this gig after about two weeks because minors weren’t
allowed to play in a place where hard liquor was sold. Following that I played with a couple of small garage bands as a keyboard player. As
a member of these bands we never had the opportunity of playing any gigs but, a couple of months later one of the bands was approached
for a try-out for a gig on a teen night at a local pizza place. As we got to the audition, I started messing around with a couple of songs while
the rest of the band was setting up. The manager immediately walked up to me, gave me the gig, and sent the rest of the band home. And
I got the job as a solo artist. What we know today to be the band Icon and The Black Roses started four years ago when Johnny decided to start his own band in 1999. He met David, the band's former drummer and together they started “Blue Obsession”. During this period they had a hard time finding suitable elements for the band and after several people coming in and out of the band, Johnny and David decided to record a demo anyways. Together they went to Espinha, who was a good friend of Johnny's since childhood, and they started recording a demo at his place. In the meantime Luis (keyboard player) and Ana (singer) joined the band in time to record their parts in songs like “Remember” and “No More” . The demo called “4 Winter Songs” took six months to record.

Soon after the recordings were finished, the band decided to send the demo all over Europe . Later on they would sign a deal with Dark-Wings records. In the meantime, and having the demo in their hands, Sean Rose joined the band after a glamorous audition. Within months, Dark-Wings were demanding a 5 Track CD to be edited in Germany . So the band went into their own studio, which they acquired soon after signing the deal, and recorded 5 tracks (including Black Cage and Dreams and Silver Tears) mixed by Charlie Bauerfiend in Tenerife. In the meantime Sebastian was looking for a band after getting out of a Black Metal band that collapsed soon after his departure. So, he heard of Blue Obsession and decided he was the right guitar player for the band. With this new formation the band decided to call itself “ICON”.

Time went by with the band preparing their live shows but after a while our big friend David left the band and Mike Thorne replaced him (after a successful show of wrecking drumsticks). When the EP was ready, the label then decided it didn't have any commercial value as it was only a 5 tracks CD. So this EP was never released. They decided it was time to record a real album and Tommy Newton was the producer for that. So the band recorded 4 tracks in Lisbon with Tommy Newton (which included songs like Crucify you love and Angel), unfortunately there was no chance of working with him for the final production. The label picked Michael Gerlach for the production, he did it with Max Devil and the band. It was later mixed by Espinha and Max. During this process Luis left the band and Ana was dismissed. So the band took a long journey to find a new keyboard player, and the female vocals would be sung by Johnny himself whenever he had an identity crisis. Did I say long? ok it took them one week and “Adam the master of keyboards” Nox joined the band. After this love and hate stories the band decided to finally change their name to “Icon and The Black Roses” and are now ready to spread Glitter, Metal and Roses all over the world.
